Frequently asked questions
Does 1 KB mean 1000 or 1024 bytes here?
Forms differ, so the maximum is read as 1000 bytes per KB and the minimum as 1024. A file made this way passes a form that counts either way.
Why was my image made smaller in pixels?
When even low quality cannot reach the target, the tool can shrink the pixel size step by step. This only happens if 'Allow shrinking' is on, and never when you have set an exact pixel size.
Will the photo lose quality?
JPEG and WebP are lossy, so a smaller file always means some detail is lost. The tool picks the highest quality that still fits, and shows a before and after preview so you can judge it. An image that already fits in the chosen format is left untouched.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. The image is decoded and re-encoded by your browser on this device. Re-saving also removes EXIF data such as camera details and GPS location - except when the image already fits and is returned untouched. To be sure, run it through Remove Photo Metadata.
